Attorneys Brianna Apfelbaum Kula and Michael J. Kula are proud to be part of the Apfelbaum family tradition that began in 1949 in Sunbury, Pennsylvania.
Sidney Apfelbaum was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar on April 11, 1949, following his graduation from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. His law school graduation was delayed by four and a half years of active combat military service with the 69th Infantry Division during World War II. Sidney worked tirelessly for many years developing his law practice and was eventually joined by two of his sons. When Michael M. Apfelbaum, Sidney’s youngest son, joined the family business in 1985, the firm became known as Apfelbaum, Apfelbaum & Apfelbaum.
Through their years of practice, the firm worked for a number of high-profile clients in the Greater Susquehanna Valley and beyond. A lifelong friend of Sigfried Weis, Robert Weis, and Charles B. Degenstein, Sidney was instrumental in transforming Weis Markets into a publicly traded company in 1965. He also helped to establish The 1994 Charles B. Degenstein Foundation, one of the most prestigious private foundations in the region. Michael M. Apfelbaum was proud to follow in his father’s footsteps and worked with many public and private clients, including the City of Sunbury, Shikellamy School District, Northumberland County Airport Authority, Penn Valley Airport Authority, and the family of Janet C. Weis.
In 2009, Michael M. Apfelbaum’s daughter, Brianna Apfelbaum Kula, and her husband, Michael J. Kula, joined Apfelbaum, Apfelbaum & Apfelbaum. Michael M. Apfelbaum worked closely with his daughter and son-in-law. Together, the team represented a wide variety of clients in diverse legal matters and successfully litigated civil cases in Union, Snyder, Northumberland, Lycoming, Luzerne, Montour, and Columbia Counties.
Michael M. Apfelbaum’s life and legal career ended tragically on September 7, 2015 when he, his wife, Christina, and his father-in-law, Clarence “Mike” Imgrund, perished in an airplane crash. Following Michael M. Apfelbaum’s passing, the firm of Apfelbaum, Apfelbaum & Apfelbaum dissolved.
Brianna Apfelbaum Kula and Michael J. Kula formed Apfelbaum Kula, P.C. in 2016 with the goal of continuing the Apfelbaum family tradition of practicing law in Central Pennsylvania. From the firm's inception, Sidney Apfelbaum was Of Counsel and together Brianna, Michael, and Sidney continued as a team. Grateful for the time spent and wisdom imparted by Michael M. Apfelbaum over years of practice together, they recognized that he was more than just a father, father-in-law, and son to them, but also a partner, a mentor, and someone who trusted them to get the job done. Sidney passed away in August 2016 and Brie and Mike strive to continue the legacy bestowed upon them by Sidney and Michael.
